Bilirubin In Your Pet’s Urine = Bilirubinuria

It is not abnormal to find slight amounts of bilirubin in the urine of healthy dogs. None should be present in the urine of cats. When bilirubin is there in larger amounts in either species, it can be due to all the causes I listed for increases in direct (conjugated or soluble) bilirubin in your pet’s blood stream. Read those causes here. Of the two forms of bilirubin, only the direct aka conjugated bilirubin has the ability to appear in your pet’s urine.

Any dog or cat that has the yellowish tinge of jaundice will have increased amounts of bilirubin in its urine as well as in its blood.
